Scientists
at CERN"s control center celebrate after the successful restart
operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) on November 20, 2009 near
Geneva, Switzerland. The world"s biggest atom-smasher had shut down
after its inauguration in September 2008 amid technical faults, and
restarted on November 20, 2009. CERN spokesman James Gillies said the
injections lasted a fraction of a second, enough for "a half or even a
complete circuit" of the Large Hadron Collider built in a 27-kilometer
(17-mile) long tunnel straddling the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva.
